Is it possible to attain Nirvana by attaining the fruit of the path today?
FeelingsThe direct answer is, Yes, it is possible to attain the fruit of the path and attain Nibbana even today. But there are certain specific conditions that must be fulfilled for that to happen.
- The Buddha's assurance (answer to the wandering monk Subhadda),
The Buddha, in response to a question asked by the wandering monk Subhadda just before his passing away, said, "Subhadda, in any order in which the Noble Eightfold Path exists, in that order there are the first ascetic (sovan), the second ascetic (sakrudagami), the third ascetic (anagami), and the fourth ascetic (arahat). Subhadda, if the group of monks practices correctly (samma), the world will not be empty of arahants." That is, since the Noble Eightfold Path (precepts, concentration, wisdom) still exists in the world today, there is no obstacle to seeing Nibbana if people follow it correctly.
- As long as there is pariyapti...
When it comes to how the Dhamma is destroyed, the first thing that is lost is the path (understanding), then the path (practice), and finally the pariyapti (Dharma texts). Currently, since we have the Tripitaka Dhamma (pariyapti) preserved, the path to Nibbana remains open to someone who has studied that Dhamma correctly and reached the principle.
- Obstacles in today's time,
Unlike the time of the Buddha, there are several reasons why it is difficult to obtain the fruit of the path today, • External attraction: Due to the abundance of technology, entertainment, and sensual objects, it has become difficult to harmonize the mind (samadhi). • Lack of teachers, it is difficult to identify teachers who can guide correctly and have practically achieved the path. • Doubt (vikkichāva), "Can these things be done today?" is a great obstacle to the path to Nibbāna.
- Unwholesomeness and the fruit of the path,
Even today, only those who have committed countless sinful acts (such as killing their parents) and those who have definite delusions can attain Nibbāna. Anyone who commits ordinary sins can attain enlightenment if they come to the right path. Although we cannot be sure whether there are Arahants today or not, there is still a chance for someone who practices the Dhamma to attain the fruit of enlightenment. This is because the Dhamma of the Buddha is timeless (akāliko). It is valid for any time.✨🍃🕊️🙏 Sources (Dharma texts), • Digha Nikaya – Maha Parinibbana Sutta (The Conversation on the Blessed One) • Samyutta Nikaya – Magga Samyuttaya (The Noble Eightfold Path) • Anguttara Nikaya – Tika Nipata / Panchaka Nipata (The Path of the Five Elements – The Path of the Path – The Path of the Path) • Visuddhi Magga – Acharya Buddhaghosa Thero • Theravada Commentary Literature
