Underwater Strategy: Tracking, Surveillance, and Future Conflict
DiscussionsThis isn't my own idea; it's an opinion from a foreigner I saw on the web. Maybe I was a bit too hasty in saying the attack was carried out by a submarine. It should be enough to just say 'we did it'; there’s no real point in getting into how it was done, right?
Here is the thing: if, by any chance, the sub surfaced even slightly before or after the attack, even its periscope would be enough (there's video, after all) to determine its location.
Chinese and Russian military satellites now have the technology to detect such signatures in the sea and then use supercomputers to track the submarine's location with a high success rate.
Because of the Taiwan issue, China is likely keeping a very close eye on this attack. After all, in a future war, this Minnesota-class submarine would be a huge headache for their navy. Finding it early and preparing to send it to the 'afterlife' is definitely an option they would be looking at.
