🚨 Iranian Warship 'IRIS Dena' Sinks Off the Coast of Galle: Massive Rescue Operation Underway
Discussions🔴 As far as I know, it was the American security forces who first notified our security forces about this incident (I take no responsibility for this part 😀).
Everyone is talking today about the Iranian Navy warship, 'IRIS Dena,' which met with an accident and began to sink around 5:00 AM today (March 4), about 40 nautical miles off the coast of Galle.
This is a domestically built Iranian frigate-class ship, equipped with missiles and radar. It was on its way back after participating in the recent "MILAN 2026" international naval exercise in India when it met with this accident.
As soon as the news was received, our Navy and Air Force immediately launched a massive rescue operation. There were about 180 crew members on the ship. However, so far, only about 30–35 people have been rescued.
The survivors have been admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital in Galle. Reports indicate that the condition of several of them is serious.
What happened to the remaining 145 people? Search and rescue operations are still underway by sea and air. 🚁🚤 However, the situation currently suggests there is little hope of finding them alive.
There is still no official announcement regarding the exact cause of the accident. Given the military tensions in the Middle East, there is a high possibility that this could have been an attack. All the information currently available seems to point in that direction.
However, our Foreign Minister clarified in Parliament today that even though this is a foreign warship, the search and rescue operation is being conducted based on humanitarian grounds in accordance with international law. Therefore, it is confirmed that this will not create any unnecessary complications for us.
Understanding the Maritime Zones Regarding the area where this accident occurred:
Territorial Sea: From the coast up to 12 nautical miles. This is where our country's laws fully apply and where we hold full sovereignty.
Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ): From the coast up to 200 nautical miles. We have the right to utilize the resources (fish, minerals, etc.) within this limit. However, international law permits ships from any country to navigate peacefully ("Freedom of Navigation") through this zone.
The location of the incident: The 'IRIS Dena' accident occurred about 40 nautical miles off the coast of Galle.
What does this mean? The ship was outside our 12-nautical-mile territorial sea (i.e., in international waters). However, the location falls within our 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Let us pray that our security forces are able to save at least one more life from the remaining missing sailors.
